But, HSS is the best solution for shooting in bright days when you want to add a little fill, and have to have a fast shutter speed outside. That said HSS is not without challenges for some brands of cameras, such as Pentax.+ADw-/b+AD4APA-/p+AD4- +ADw-h2+AD4-What is HSS Flash Mode?+ADw-/h2+AD4- +ADw-span id+AD0AIg-pqr+ACIAPg-HSS is not the right tool for fast moving subject matter+ADw-/span+AD4- +ADw-p class+AD0AIg-dc+ACIAPg-So HSS is a unique flash mode that differs from all the other flash modes because if the way it works inside the camera, mechanically. Regular flash modes all work in the same way: user presses the shutter, the first of two curtains opens on the sensor, the flash happens when the sensor's curtain is fully open, and then the curtain closes... bingo, shot taken. The key takeaway here is that the curtain is fully open when the flash happens.+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADw-p+AD4-HSS doesn't work this way. With HSS, the camera's curtain doesn't fully open but instead only opens for a small horizontal slit, which travels across the sensor for the duration of the shot. And, rather than one single bright flash, HSS pulses keep flashing whilst the slit is travelling, as to make sure it combines to light up every part of the sensor, top to bottom. And it is precisely this is that differentiates HSS from regular flash modes.+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADw-h2+AD4-Using HSS For Macro+ADw-/h2+AD4- +ADw-p class+AD0AIg-dc+ACIAPg-HSS is notorious for not working on a moving target. This makes sense, because with it being a series of pulses, if there's movement between pulses then it's not going to freeze the motion, the movement will show. Bottom line, HSS is not the right tool for fast moving subject matter. So, for fast-moving hoverflies or bees, forget it, HSS isn't for you. That said, if you're using your flash just for fill rather than as key, then HSS works just fine. In other words you want to lighten up some dark areas on a bug sitting on a leaf/flower, then HSS is an ideal tool. So if the subject is stationary and your shutter speed is fast enough to create a sharp shot then HSS is really an excellent tool to have in your toolbag. I typically use it at -1.5EV(FEC) just to add some light into an area that might otherwise be too dark, for example shooting against the sky.+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADw-h2+AD4-HSS In Use+ADw-/h2+AD4- +ADw-span id+AD0AIg-pqr+ACIAPg-... if you're using your flash just for fill rather than as key, then HSS works just fine+ADw-/span+AD4- +ADw-p class+AD0AIg-dc+ACIAPg-At the time of writing (Spring 2016), when I'm out and about I'm using two systems, a butterfly setup (Pentax K3II crop camera with extension tube, 70-200 and a dual arm flash bracket with a Metz 58 on one and a Pentax 540 on the other), and a bugs setup (Canon 5DII with MPE65 and MT-24EX). Both of my cameras allow custom setting, and I have HSS set up as one of the user choices on both. I have Magic Lantern running on the camera which allows me to program in a nice +-2EV 7 step bracketing series, which goes automatically into HSS mode if the exposure requirements warrant it. I program in this bracketing range because I'm forcing myself to use flash as fill (ie set at -1.5FEC), to make sure that the backgrounds aren't black. The bracketing range lets me use depth of field bracketing to control the brightness of the background (ie at f/4 I get sky colour if shooting at the sky rather than the solid black I'd get at f/22). MT-24EX is a very intelligent, functional specialist flash from Canon, that combines beautifully with MPE65 and makes for about the best possible extreme macro setup in one dedicated package. The HSS works flawlessly on this setup, never a problem.+ADw-p+AD4- +ADw-p+AD4-With my Pentax crop camera (k3II), I'm using a dual arm flash setup, to give myself the choice of two forms of bracketing depending on whether it's sunny or overcast. When it's sunny, I switch over to using the flash on my left by flipping the switch on my PTTL extension cord. I have USER mode 2 reserved for this on the camera, and it sets off with typical sunny weather shooting speeds and lets me have a 5 bracketed series at HSS speeds. The limitation of the Pentax system though is that it uses flash exposure bracketing (in other words aperture bracketing doesn't work on K3II+ADs- it actually results in a fixed apertures but with the brightness of the flash pulses varying which mimics the bracketing). This is a new bug on Pentax cameras that seems to have been around since K3.+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADw-p+AD4-That said, the other side of the flash bracket has a 540 on it controlled by a cheap ebay radio transmitter, and because it's off camera and uses a fixed manual power flash strength setting, aperture bracketing does actually work. So if I choose the right flash by toggling the switch, it gives me a nice bracketed series of shots at f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8 and f/11 again with flash as fill, but it's not using the flash' HSS mode so the shutter speed is always above 1/180 (Pentax flash sync speeds).+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADw-h2+AD4-Battery Depletion+ADw-/h2+AD4- +ADw-p class+AD0AIg-dc+ACIAPg-One thing for macro shooters to bear in mind about HSS is that as it involves pulsing flashes, this means that your battery will wear out quickly. Always carry a whole bunch of spare batteries or use an external battery pack if you're going to have a lot of HSS use.+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADw-h2+AD4-Flashes+ADw-/h2+AD4- +ADw-p class+AD0AIg-dc+ACIAPg-Check that your flash can do HSS before you buy it+ADs- HSS tends to be reserved to more recent flashes. For Pentax users, look at Oakatec, Cactus V6 or Acon 930 for forms of wireless HSS. Wireless HSS is very primitive in Pentax land because of limited radio triggers and the inability (at the time of writing) to vary output strengths between HSS groups.+ADw-/p+AD4- +ADwAIQ---ZOOMSTOP--+AD4- +ADw-div id+AD0AIg-relbb+ACIAPg- +ADw-h4+AD4-Related Articles+ADw-/h4+AD4- +ADw-div class+AD0AIg-grid+AF8-2 alpha+ACIAPg- +ADw-p+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/macro-flash-modes/+ACIAPgA8-img src+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/macro-flash-modes/em-100.jpg+ACI- alt+AD0AIg-Plusses and minuses of various flash modes used for extreme macro photography+ACI- /+AD4APA-/a+AD4APA-br+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/macro-flash-modes/+ACIAPg-Plusses and minuses of various flash modes used for extreme macro photography+ADw-/a+AD4APA-/p+AD4- +ADw-/div+AD4- +ADw-div class+AD0AIg-grid+AF8-2+ACIAPg- +ADw-p+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/ttl/+ACIAPgA8-img src+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/ttl/em-100.jpg+ACI- alt+AD0AIg-The +ACo-TTL flash mode, automatic metering with a pre-flash measurement flashpop+ACI- /+AD4APA-/a+AD4APA-br+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/ttl/+ACIAPg-The +ACo-TTL flash mode, automatic metering with a pre-flash measurement flashpop+ADw-/a+AD4APA-/p+AD4- +ADw-/div+AD4- +ADw-div class+AD0AIg-grid+AF8-2+ACIAPg- +ADw-p+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/rear-curtain-sync/+ACIAPgA8-img src+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/rear-curtain-sync/em-100.jpg+ACI- alt+AD0AIg-Rear curtain sync, the key to avoid ugly flash ghosting+ACI- /+AD4APA-/a+AD4APA-br+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/rear-curtain-sync/+ACIAPg-Rear curtain sync, the key to avoid ugly flash ghosting+ADw-/a+AD4APA-/p+AD4- +ADw-/div+AD4- +ADw-div class+AD0AIg-grid+AF8-2+ACIAPg- +ADw-p+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/metz-58-af2-flash/+ACIAPgA8-img src+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/metz-58-af2-flash/em-100.jpg+ACI- alt+AD0AIg-The Metz 58 AF2 flash for macro+ACI- /+AD4APA-/a+AD4APA-br+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/metz-58-af2-flash/+ACIAPg-Good for manual settings: the Metz 58 AF2 flash+ADw-/a+AD4APA-/p+AD4- +ADw-/div+AD4- +ADw-div class+AD0AIg-grid+AF8-2 omega+ACIAPg- +ADw-p+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/pentax-af160fc-ringflash/+ACIAPgA8-img src+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/pentax-af160fc-ringflash/em-100.jpg+ACI- alt+AD0AIg-The pricey but excellent Pentax AF160FC Ringflash+ACI- /+AD4APA-/a+AD4- +ADw-br+AD4APA-a href+AD0AIg-http://extreme-macro.co.uk/pentax-af160fc-ringflash/+ACIAPg-Best manual setting Pentax flash for macro, the Pentax AF160FC+ADw-/a+AD4APA-/p+AD4- +ADw-/div+AD4- +ADw-div class+AD0AIg-clear+ACIAPgA8-/div+AD4- +ADw-/div+AD4- +ADwAIQ---ZOOMSTART--+AD4- +ADw-div id+AD0AIg-comments+ACIAPg- +ADw-a name+AD0AIg-cmtx+AF8-form+ACIAPgA8-/a+AD4- +ADw-?php require +ACQ-cmtx+AF8-path .
